So, I had a lovely conversation with a podcaster who met me via Twitter the other day... And like most of my friendships, a serendipitous conversation caused lots of laughter and that "Oh my Goodness, this person GETS me" feeling. I can't think of a good friend I haven't had that moment with.

I post the following conversation as evidence of that connection. I hope my friends laugh and maybe even remember that moment they had with me.

MM: if you don't mind me asking, how old are you?
epilonious: I am 27
MM: no kidding
epilonious: why do you ask?
MM: because you've managed to outclass me in one short conversation with virtually no effort at all, and that's usually an indication that someone is older than i, but it's also very unusual to hear about a relatively unmolested gay person who is older than I
MM: which i realize sounds a little odd, but, yanno, cognitive dissonance.
MM: Can't be having it.
epilonious: how on earth did I outclass you?
epilonious: also, how old are you? Because you don't look a day over 18. Unless we're in a bar, at which point you don't look a day over 21. In fact, it must be your 21st birthday, I should buy you a drink to celebrate...
MM: aww, that's sweet. I'm 27
MM: oddly enough
MM: but i'll always take a free drink
epilonious: a yup. And pretty much I have found that the best way to inquire about someone's age... which is a sensitive topic.
MM: i had all my sensitive topics surgically removed as a child
epilonious: it's a compliment and a free drink all in one to defuse anyone's barriers to latent agism...
epilonious: Hee. I guess we are evenly classed. waxing 20's gayish sub/urban people who are essentially yuppies but would hate to be called such because of the negative connotations of greed and insensitivity which we secretly know we exhibit sometimes but who doesn't.
MM: Heh. The -Ish Generation.
epilonious: I beleive we are actually cought right between Generation X and generation Y
epilonious: we're like whipper-snappers to Gen X and buzzkilling older siblings to Gen Y
MM: we are. depends entirely on which sociologist you want to subscribe to, but I have detected the line moving back in time over the past 15 years
MM: we were totally genX in highschool
epilonious: "don't you 'meh' me you little sumbitch, I was 8 when the first season of simpsons was on fox, only fox, and was nowhere near as big as it was today. I helped make Futurama possible. Now pull your damn pants up" "You tell 'em brother" "I ain't cho brother! I know this because I just spent 15 minutes showing you how to get your damn iPhone connected to the starbucks wireless network for free while you did nothing but bitch about how you miss bagphones because they just had 9 big buttons and a lot more cachet!"
MM: Oh my god! **laughs**
MM: you got it in one!
epilonious: damn skippy I did .

This Sunday's cast is more of a Fuzzy Gay Loveseat, or a Mini Gay Couch (Hence, MGC). This couch also has the plastic on it because BelfryExpress and Epilonious sit and talk cars a lot.

Hear us discuss our hopes and dreams for Hyundai and Scion, the chops of the Mustang GT and the Nissan 350z, the many ways car companies can screw with their customers, and why Infiniti of North Roswell sucks.

Peter, Joe and Mark talk a bunch about cars and the cars they have and the cars they want, and Joey sits on the side and refuses to be rotted on command. Still, fun was had by all, and we talk about the experiment we are about to try.

Hello Blog, how are you doing?

I know I haven't really done much with you for the past couple of months, and the last major revision was allowing for the ability to post those heathen youtube videos.

Well, I have a few things in store. I have some friends working on some graphics upgrades, and I'm tinkering with some ideas of how to have a better "blog" and not a front page based off a forum and all that sad jazz...

But that all won't mean crap if I don't post regularly, and only use this as a front end for my podcast.

The truth of the matter is that I have been spending a lot of time not here, and I need to spend more time here, even if I don't have that much of an audience. I need to talk a bit more about my own (possibly boring) adventures and see if there are some people who find my life a bit interesting or want to communicate with some random person near Atlanta Georgia.

I'm hoping to do a few things. I want to make a place for the people who like my podcast to come and read what I am doing and my thoughts in a place that is a bit more constructive than twitter. I want it to be a place where my old friends who don't give a crap about my podcast to do that too. I want to make this an environment nice enough for lots of discussion and forum chatting and all that. I guess I also just want to plot out a few essays and get peoples thoughts on 'em.

I figure I'll go for the "if you blog it, they will come" attitude. And if people don't come, then, I'll just have some stuff here that I can go back to occasionally.

In this video, we go over how BelfryExpress’ subaru is a peice, and how it thinks rear wheel bearings are candy and what it’s sweet tooth is doing to things like, oh, brake rotors.
This is why a bunch of the future videos are going to be about car shopping.

So, Spud and I went up to the parents this weekend, which is not that new or fancy...

But this time, Akom and Belfry came with us, and that made it new and exciting because they had not seen the house. They loved the house, and I loved all the new furniture that my mom got, especially outside in the enclosed patio. It was all gorgeous and outside-proof and looked like it was great for a party.

In the meantime, Dad got a new car, and it is gorgeous and we love it. We spent a better part of Saturday just driving around in it. And Belfry did probably the most rigorous testing on various highway on-ramps.

We also ran a few errands and I got some new shows... and I got a whole bunch of Yeungling (because it is sold in SC/NC and not in GA and I like it).

We also ate a lot, and it was delicious, and mostly, the four of us just had a wonderful time hanging out. It was sort of a home-away-from-home and I loved seeing my parents again and my parents love my friends and very few things are as cool.

The only thing that sucked about this weekend is that the HTC Touch Pro was delayed. It was supposed to come out today, but apparently it got pushed back to November 2. I was looking forward to it. Thankfully dwath sent me the link showing the delay on Saturday, so I didn't run to the store going "do you have it!?" only to have my hopes dashed in the store. Oh well.

At least the G1 doesn't come out until the 20th of November. Otherwise it would be a much harder decision.

Finally, one more cool thing about tonight. When I got home, Araken was lamenting his macbook being stupid and not accepting new RAM chips. He asked if I wanted to try them in mine to see if my macbook would like them. At first, it wouldn't. The macbook just kept beeping over and over. But then I tried Eric's suggestion of only running one module at a time... and they worked individually, and I tried both again and they worked. So I paid Geoff for the memory (he had found it cheap) and now my macbook has twice the memory and is behaving deliciously.

I will be happy to help him cycle his memory to see if he can get the speed I am now enjoying. He is about to go to a really cool conference and wants the dual-boot-at-the-same-time ability.
Therefore, the only way to get company policies to change and to embrace more liberal ideas of equal rights, it requires a concerted effort from a community as a whole. It is much easier to sell an idea that there is a gay community because people are gay and have an interest than to sell a liberal community who is interested in everyone's welfare. Further, by acting as a unified block, it gives much more power to the community to enact change. While it would be nice to have a live and let live attitude towards life, sometimes people think an action is so atrocious that there needs to be active change to make things better. The real question is where do you draw the line from action and inaction to make things better.

I agree with the sentiment of using a community to enact social change... but the problem I have is that such motivations are usually based in organization around anger... and while I think it was fantastic for agencies like ACT UP who lit fires under asses when people were dying, and I can understand it for companies that are blatantly unequal and were firing/passing-over gay employees and the like... I despise such boycotts and organized-outrage over nebulous circumstances of responsibility, or shady information.

All the times I have been upset because someone called for a big organized outrage over something I perceived to be under-researched and dubiously beneficial to "the Gay community." Furthermore, the people who called for it refused to allow the possibility they were wrong, and the people who signed on to be outraged were, well, doing it in a recreational manner.

In short, I feel like it has been abused as of late. And with abuse comes numbness. The Rest Of America (and the world) will start to think gay's are whiny and inconsolable if we get upset over where the CEO of manhunt spends his cash or whether Ford is giving enough ad money to gay publications.

Furthermore, it seems like the AFA and those who dislike gay people and what the community stands-for have gotten really good at "poke the bunny": They do something to make the Gay Community fly off the handle, and generally make us look whiny and inconsolable. They'll flat out lie to do it, but it annoys me that the way "we" feel is so attached to what "they" do. We should be ignoring their sillyness and decrying it as such. Not accusing companies they pretend to sway of abandoning us and our needs.

dwath wrote:

Not being interested in taking action doesn't make you a bad person, it just is a difference in opinion on when action should be taken and when it's okay to be morally relativistic. Much like questions of when people should get involved in genocide. There are some clear examples where you will get universal consent, e.g. Nazi Germany, and there are other examples where you will get largely massive indifference, e.g. Sudan. I imagine most people are morally relativistic and the question is really where to draw the line. Even if you are not, I'm not sure absolute morality is really a better solution.

I'm not arguing for absolute morality... I am basically arguing for blowhard detection and mitigation. I don't like blowhards in any community and I especially don't like them in mine. I have found several would rather try and oust me from the community than try to account for the possibility that they are wrong or being played. They don't have to relent but they could at least entertain the idea.

dwath wrote:

As for uncommon sexuality being a factor in getting to know someone, you are indeed correct that sexuality in itself does not make someone likeable. However, it gives a place for people to start their interactions. Like any other factor/background, it gives 2 different people some common ground in which to converse on. After all, I imagine most everyone has some form of coming out story and realization of their sexual desires that may or may not be well received.

Maaaaaaybe... but at the same time I know I don't have to buy into other gays freaking out over things that I think are BS, and I don't have to feel like they know what they are talking about when they call me various names rather than attacking my arguments.

In the meantime, the 7% douche-bag <-> 86% meh <-> 7% cool-as-hell ratio is maintained in the gay community as with any other.

Quote:

Btw, I saw your birthday pictures, WTF, did I get replaces as the token asian guy? WHO IS THAT ASIAN GUY IN THAT PICTURE THAT TOOK MY SPOT!!!!! BASTARD!!!!

That was Kyle, Wendy and Barry brought him. We barely talked, he seemed nice, and nobody could replace you.
