Not those kind of shots…
Greetings everyone.
To wit: I’m okay, I haven’t heard of anyone except the police officer and the shooter getting hurt, but everything points to some nutjob trying to shoot up CDC (which is next to Emory’s campus; hence all the misleading “active shooter at/on Emory Campus” news). Also, as crazy/scary as this all sounds… RFK/Trump/Musk has been near infinitely more damaging to CDC than a thousand nutjobs with guns could ever be.
More Info: The “Active Shooter on Emory Campus” was some nutjob with a more-powerful-than-a-civilian-should-ever-need gun apparently just pointing it at the CDC Roybal campus from across Clifton Road in a Mixed Used apartment/shoppes complex known as Emory Point. CDC’s main fancy campus, known as Roybal or Clifton… is on Property Right Next to Emory. It basically took over a corner that was probably used as horse stables and a railroad cargo depot and bought from Emory for a dollar (which is framed in the museum within Roybal’s campus) and CDC did so to work with Emory on studying infectious diseases in it’s evolution from the Army’s Malaria Control Center into the Centers for Disease Control. Basically cementing this idea that “having a bunch of government employees good at public (health) communication and effective medical investment right next to a bunch of professor-doctors studying weird tropical and rural infectious diseases” was a good thing.
I don’t work at that campus. I haven’t worked at that campus except for a brief stint while I was a contractor in 2009-2010. I rarely drive to it even for work and consider it a pain-in-the-ass to get-to because it’s in the middle of Fancy University Town surrounded by single-lane residential streets, and I don’t want to add to it’s traffic problems if I can avoid it. A large number of CDC’s employees, especially those that don’t deal directly with professor-doctors and heads of state, work on other CDC properties or leased spaces around the Atlanta area. During COVID, we found that most of us could work remote. Either way, it looks like the biggest casualty from said nutjob was unfortunately a Dekalb Police Officer and some windows in fancy buildings… and I work in a building that is across from a street and some businesses where some nutjob could set up with a more-powerful-than-a-civilian-should-ever-have gun and shoot at it… and I am not even blinking an eye.
Because the threats I’m worried about are coming from DC, not across some Atlantan Highway, and the current administration has already taken some big swipes and caused a lot of damage to the agency and stolen a lot of money from it and others in hopes of building a big secret federal police force staffed by the likes of Bob Ewell and his family from To Kill A Mockingbird. And I’m guessing the threats to the agency I work-for are spending this weekend to see if they can blame brown people and other immigrants and ramp up their need for a big secret police force… or completely burying details of the shooter in bullshit and distractions if the shooter turns out to be some odious white dude who needed something to blame that wasn’t himself and the conspiracy theories weren’t working like they used-to ever since AI showed up to enshittify them.
I guess one of the things that gives me hope is the theft at my agency is getting held up in court, and nobody has actually been fired. It’s very much looking like the people who were affected by the RIF are going to be paid taxpayer dollars to Not Work and may stick around longer than even people who chose to take the Deferred Resignation because as much as the current US administration would like you to believe it’s all-powerful, congress writes the checks to fill the president’s accounts… and congress just put out a bipartisan effort to basically go “Nah, we aren’t getting the results you promised, their budget is the same as last year, and you can’t fire anyone because they’re gonna need to be there to spend it properly”
